Today was the day the big hike started and we had to split into two teams because our group was so large. The first team went to hike to Dragonfly Peak. On the first day we covered so much ground. Although the terrain was flat at first it quickly became vertical. We all felt like we were climbing a large set of stairs to get to the top.

Our guide, Whitney, was the co-owner of the hike company and was taking us to his secret base camp that not many knew about. This camp was about 1,000 meters above sea level and was not easy to find. It was right before the edge of the tree line and was not easy to find at first. When we found the site we quickly set up and had some dinner. When it got dark we all decided to sleep outside under the stars. The stars were magnificent as they twinkled all through the night. The stars put a good ending to our very long first day for hiking.

Notre groupe a été divisé en deux équipes pour la grande escalade qui nous attendait car le groupe était trop gros. La première équipe s’est dirigée pour escalader le sommet Dragonfly. Nous avons couvert une distance impressionnante en cette première journée. Plat au départ, le terrain s’est rapidement transformé en dénivellation verticale. Nous avions l’impression de monter un long escalier pour atteindre le sommet.

Notre guide, Whitney, était le propriétaire d’une compagnie d’escalade et il nous a menés vers son camp de base secret, inconnu de la majorité. Ce camp était situé à 1000 mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer et était très difficile à trouver. Bien caché près d’une ligne d’arbre, nous avons eu de la difficulté à s’y rendre. Dès l’arrivée, ce fut l’installation et le repas. À la tombée de la soirée, nous avons décidé de coucher à la belle étoile. Les étoiles étaient magnifiques et elles scintillaient toute la nuit. Le spectacle offert par ces étoiles représentait un beau point final à cette première longue journée de randonnée.
