August 26: Caitlyn Cavanagh-Dollard

Caitlyn Cavanagh-Dollard is from RCACC 2444 West Nova Scotia Regiment in Kentville, Nova Scotia and is in grade 12.

Everyone was up early and all the gear was quickly loaded on to the bus. A 7 hour drive started our journey. Everyone mostly slept with the exceptions of seeing the wild buffalo, ferry crossings, & such. Once we arrived at Fort Simpson we unpacked the bus and then got all the kit organized and ready to be quickly loaded onto the plane. There was about a 2 hour turn around time for the flights. I was on the second flight and when the plane came in it was very exciting. I was trying to get a picture but was yelled at to “get on the plane”. The view from up in the sky was beautiful. This is my first time out west and first time seeing real mountains. The mountains in Nova Scotia are only hills compared to out here. Being on the small twin otter plane made me think of Gary Paulson’s book “The Hatchet”. The pilot took us right over Virginia Falls which was beautiful before landing. Then we set up our biv site and got comfortable. When the last plane in was ready to depart it put on a little bit of a show for us by flying right overhead. That plane flying away was our last sight of civilization for the next week.
